Pre-Purchase Examinations
We can help you make decisions as to what kind of animal would
make the best pet for you, or examine an animal that you have had
your eye on, before you introduce it to your family and household. |
 |
Vaccinations
Vaccines for puppies should begin at 6 - 8 weeks and they should
be vaccinated every 4 weeks until 16weeks of age. Kittens should
begin at the same age, but come every 4 week, until 12 - 16 weeks,
depending on the vaccines that apply to your new addition. Cats,
dogs and ferrets should be vaccinated and examined at least once
annually. |
 |
Health Check-up and Physical Exams
Cats, dogs and ferrets should visit their veterinarian annually,
but did you know that birds, reptiles, rabbits and other small critters
should see their vet as well? We like to see them every year at
least. Annual blood work on birds and reptiles help us know how
they are doing on the inside as well as on the outside and allow
us to detect illness much sooner. |
 |
Spay and Neuter Services
Spay and neuter surgeries can be done as early as 3 months of age.
Pre-pubescent surgery can often decrease the chances of adult behaviors
such as spraying and roaming, that we see after our pets have reached
maturity. An animal spayed, or neutered after going through puberty
endures a much more involved and difficult surgery compared to a
youngster, and the recovery can be much longer and harder on your
pet. Spaying and neutering not only decreases the unwanted pet population,
but makes for a happier, healthier pet and is proven to prevent
certain health problems later in life. Many Humane Societies and
shelters within North America are doing their kitten and puppy surgeries
at 8 to 12 weeks. Contrary to popular wives' tales, there are no
health benefits to allowing your pet to endure a heat cycle or a
pregnancy before being spayed. |
 |
Fecal Exams for Parasites
Animals that spend alot of time outdoors, or that cat of yours
that likes to snack on the neighborhood birds and mice should be
tested and dewormed regularly. |
 |
Blood Testing to Detect Illness
Blood testing can tell us many things about our pet. We can detect
infections, viruses, kidney or liver problems and many other things
with the tests that we do. Even healthy pets should have tests done.
This gives the doctor a normal value from which to base results
if your pet ever becomes ill, and can ease some of the anxiety associated
with anethesia risks. Elderly animals are more prone to health problems
and should be checked according to your veterinarian's recommendations.
Our in-house lab machines give us results in under an hour. |
 |
Heartworm Testing
Heartworm disease is spread by moquito bites. We recommend testing
your dog in the spring and treating with a chewable preventative
each month from May 1st to October 1st. |
 |
Dentistry
Full dental scaling, polishing and flouride can be done under anesthetic
to keep your dog, cat, or ferrets' teeth looking pearly white. We
use top of the line equipment, such as our ultrasonic scaler, just
like in your dentist's office. Don't forget to brush their teeth
daily to keep them nice and healthy. |
 |
Radiography (X-Rays)
Our X-Ray facilities can accommodate any size animal from a 150
pound dog right down to a 100 gram hamster. |
 |
Surgery
Our complete surgical suite complements our veterinarian, whether
she performs routine spays and neuters, or more complicated surgeries. |
 |
Endoscopy
For some types of internal examinations or exploratory procedures,
we may be able to use our endoscope. An endoscope is a long, thin,
flexible tool equipped with a fiber optic light and a camera on
the end. This can make the procedure less invasive than traditional
surgery. |
 |
Electrocardiography (ECG)
Our ECG machine allows us to detect irregularities in animal's
heart. This allows us to take much better care of your pet in health
and in illness and can help take some of the risk out of surgery
for older animals. |
 |
Doppler Blood Pressure Monitoring
and Pulse Oximetry
Our doppler ultrasonic flow monitor works in association with the
monitoring by the AHT's during surgery to make it as safe as possible.
The pulse oximeter detects heart rate and measures oxygenation of
the blood while your pet is under anesthesia. |
 |
Rabbit and Guinea Pig Tooth Trimming
Let us trim their teeth to keep their chewing behaviors normal.
See our Exotic Pets section for a
few more details on the often overlooked condition. |
 |
Avian Wing, Beak, and Nail Trims
A bird with trimmed wings tends to stay out of trouble and isoften
a little more tame. Nail trims, beak trims and wing trims help your
bird look and feel his best. Our staff is trained and experienced
in performing these procedures. |
 |
Reptile Nail Trims
Regular nail trimming for your reptile or turtle helps to prevent
inuries to you and your pet. |

Microchips or Tattoos for Identification
of Animals
Tattoos - Provincial tattoos are a great, visible and inexpensive
way to ensure your pet will arrive home safe if ever lost. A letter
and number code can be identified by any veterinarian clinic in
the province, or by the Humane Society. A tattoo is usually done
under general anesthetic at the same time as spay, or neuter.
Microchips - the microchip is a small device inserted under the
skin of your pet. If that animal is ever lost, the SPCA, or veterinary
clinic can scan the animal (like the box of cereal at the supermarket)
and get the owner's name and phone number so he/she can be returned
safely home. |
 |
Behavior Counseling
Behavior problems in pets are the number one reason that many end
up in shelters, or euthanised. Check out our behavior
section on this site to see our recommendations. |
 |
Diet Counseling
Our staff can help you choose a food appropriate to the dietary
needs of any species of pet. We also carry a selection of specialized,
