Dr. Irene Phillips is the staff veterinarian. She has many years
of experience dealing with dogs and cats, with a special interest
in caged animals: rabbits, ferrets, rodents, reptiles and birds.
A graduate of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon (1987),
Dr Phillips has experience at both the Calgary Zoo and the Metro Toronto Zoo.
In addition to the obedience that Dr. Phillips
does with her dogs, she makes a number of contributions to the community.
She does volunteer work for the Calgary Humane Society, has written
articles for dog and guinea pig club newsletters, lectures to school
and community groups and is a member of the board of directors of
PALS, yet still manages time for her family. In the last few years,
Dr. Phillips has also been teaching exotic pet care and handling
to the Animal Health Technology students at Olds College. When she
has spare time, she enjoys competing n the Hunter/Jumper rings with
her horse Inky.
Our staff is rounded out by registered Animal
Health Technologists (veterinary nurses), a kennel assistant,
and receptionists. Everyone on staff have extensive hands on experience
with dogs, cats and the caged pets.
The Animal Health Technologists are fully trained and qualified
to perform tasks such as drawing blood, taking radiographs (x-rays),
lab work, administration and monitoring anesthesia, surgical preparation
and assistance, administering medications & injections, nail
trimming, avian wing trims, and providing caring attention to your
special pet.
We take pride in our profession and are continuously striving to
learn more. In addition to purchasing new textbooks each year and
subscribing to many specialty veterinary magazines, we participate
in on-line chats with other veterinarians with similar cases and
special interests. Our veterinarian and animal health technologists annually attend many continuing education
seminars all over North America.
We are also members in good standing of the following associations:
- Alberta Veterinary Medical Association
- Alberta Association of Animal Health Technologists
- Canadian Veterinary Medical Association
- Canadian Association of Animal Health Technologists and Technicians
- Calgary Academy of Veterinary Medicine
- Association of Avian Veterinarians
- Association of Reptile and Amphibian Veterinarians
- Canadian Association of Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarians
